Sheet Music

The theme, which forms the basis of these variations, comes from Exercise 45 of Franz Krüger’s (1880 - 1940) School for Timpani and Snare Drum. Each variation emphasises one specific area (e.g., rolls, tied rolls, tuning/pedal technique, accidental notes, two-handed playing, playing on 4, 5, or even 7 timpani etc..). Each focal point is placed in a musical context, giving the player a wide variety of technical and musical demands in each study, similar to the job of a timpanist in an orchestra.
